The first seasonal observation of juveniles of Philaenus spumarius in Salento
On February 6, 2018, within the framework of POnTE research activities consisting of periodical samplings and field observations aimed to study the biology of the Aphrophoridae species vectors of Xylella fastidiosa in the Apulia region, Philaenus spumarius juvenile forms were observed for the first time in the season.
Insects were found on Erigeron spp. in the countryside of Lecce and on dicotyledonous plant species in Valenzano (Bari). Using the microscopic examination of key morphological characters, specimens were identified as Philaenus spumarius nymphs, stage N1.
On February 8, 2018, the research team of CNR-IPSP, University of Bari and CRSFA “Basile Caramia”, formally notified the Regional Plant Protection Service of this finding.
